The Watch

The company Movado was founded in 1881 in the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds by the watchmaker Achille Ditesheim. The name Movado means “always in motion” in Esperanto and reflects the company’s focus on innovation in watch design.

The famous Movado Museum Watch was designed in 1947 by the designer Nathan George Horwitt. His idea was radical for its time: the dial should be extremely minimalist, no numbers, no hour markers, only a single dot at 12 o’clock

The small circle at 12 represents: the sun at noon -the rest of the dial represents the sky the hands symbolize the movement of the Earth through time. This turned the watch into a work of art rather than just a timekeeping instrument.

Horwitt’s design became so influential that in 1959 it was included in the collection of
Museum of Modern Art in New York City. After that, the model became known as the: “Museum Watch.”
