The watch
The Longines ref. 628.5240 “Charles Lindbergh Hour Angle” is not just a watch—it’s a direct descendant of one of the most important instruments in early aviation history. To understand it properly, you need to go back to the late 1920s.
The story begins with Charles Lindbergh, who in 1927 made the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic. After this achievement, Lindbergh became deeply interested in a major challenge pilots still faced: How do you determine your exact position (longitude) mid-flight
Lindbergh worked with: Philip Van Horn Weems (navigation expert) and Longines, weems had already developed a “second-setting” watch, but Lindbergh improved the concept.
In 1931, Longines produced the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch. It allowed pilots to: Use a sextant + time + nautical tables, calculate the Greenwich Hour Angle, determine longitude during flight. In simple terms: It turned a wristwatch into a navigation computer.
