The Watch
For all military interested people. Look what we got here!
This watch have been bought from a client who’s fathers was a former military in Sweden (Ljungbyhed) during WW2. Equipment that could be issued to positions where accurate timekeeping was particularly important. Probably related to the optical air surveillance system that was under the Army’s control in the early 20th century.
After the First World War, the threat posed by aircraft began to be taken much more seriously. Optical air surveillance towers were established, initially under Army command. They were especially concentrated in southern Sweden and reported to several air surveillance centers.
Each tower contained a box of equipment for the air observers to use: manuals covering different types of aircraft, binoculars, measuring instruments, and a clock. The clocks were particularly important for recording the exact moment an aircraft passed a given point. Swedish aircraft could then be directed to intercept it.
