The Watch

We probably aren’t alone in realising that Movado is a far too low valued watch brand. There are tons of discredited and underestimated watch brands but perhaps Movado is the most forgotten of them all. Especially if you take a look at what they have done in terms of engineering and design. We will only touch a fraction of their achievements but we hope to shed some light on this amazing brand. We are especially happy to be able to present our very own Movado - but more on that later on. Movado was founded in 1881 in a small watchmakers shop in Chaux -de-Fonds. The name is sprung from the international language Esperanto and means active.

Our watch was sold, according to the certificate, the 4/1 in 1967 by Mollstedts watch shop in Karlstad. It was sold to KMW - “Karlstads Mekaniska Verkstad”, a workshop company founded in 1860. We find it extra fun that KMW also can be connected to watches - not to wristwatches but to slightly bigger timepieces. After the great city fire in Karlstad in 1865 the great church of Karlstad was severely destroyed and the most significant sign of the church - its big watch was in need of replacement. This work was assigned to KMW who throughout history have produced far more than just watches. They are known among other things for making material for train tracks, machines and propellers for ships.

Our Movado was given to KMW employees as a gift for 50 years of service. Note, 50 years in one company! Talk about company loyalty. The person receiving our watch was celebrated for 50 years in the company in December in 1966 and therefore started the KMW journey in 1916! The owner has been careful with the watch and is not likely to have worn it more than once or twice. The box is untouched, the certificate is barely opened and the condition of the watch is close to brand new even if there are some very very small traces of use. This is really a watch that you rarely see!!
