The watch

The story about Longines-Wittnauer is like a fairy tale. It started in the year 1872 with the 16 year old Albert Wittnauer who were searching for a better future and other possibilities than the ones he had in Switzerland. He decided to test his fortunes with his brother-in-law Eugene Roberts in New York. Eugene then runs a business where he import luxury objects and also luxury watches for example Vacheron & Constantin, JLC m.fl.

Albert dreams big and soon make plans to create his own watchbrand and make affordable luxury watches from his homeland Switzerland and distribute them to the American market. Albert was a very driven young man and succeeded to reach his dream in 1880 when the first Wittnauer watch was manufactured. About the same time Eugenes company (where Albert still had his employment) had made a deal and partnership with Longines. They started to work as the Longines distributor for all of their watches to the American market. This was a partnership that kept going for 125 years.

In the year 1890 Albert started a sistercompany "A. Wittnauer Company", a company that rapidly grew strong and whithin a short time could function on its own. Albert took his two brothers from the poverty in Switzerland to his American company. Together they created a very successfull business. But as all beautiful stories must end so must also Alberts'. The three brothers all died soon after eachother and all of a sudden the company was left without a knowledgeable leader. 1916 the company was inherited to their sister - Martha Wittnauer. The first female CEO of a watchcompany. She lead the company with brilliance and lead them through both WW1 and the great depression.

In 1936 the comapny however was sold to "Hella Deltah" who chose to focus on the cooperation that was connectable to "Longines - Wittnauer". It is under this era that our amazing watch is made!
