The Watch

Compagnie des Montres Longines Francillon S.A., or simply Longines is a Swiss luxury watchmaker based in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, founded by Auguste Agassiz in 1832. Longines winged hourglass logo, which was registered in 1889, is the oldest unchanged yet still active registered trademark.

In 1954 Longines launched the Conquest line, and with it a new era for the company.

The Conquest was the first step in a new development and marketing strategy with a named line or family of watches. Many more were to follow, but the venerable Conquest was the beginning.

The first generation Conquest as we got here is probably the most classic and easily recognizable iteration of the line for collectors of vintage watches. It ran from 1954 to about 1959, when a new case shape and movement were introduced.

The case is a study in simple yet rugged understatement. Similar to many of the Omega Seamasters of the era, it measures 35.2mm wide by 42.6mm long with 18mm lugs. Speaking of lugs, this model has beautiful beefy lugs with a nice subtle chamfer on the outer edge, again similar to the Seamasters. The caseback however, is quite different and something that set the Conquest apart from other contemporaries. It has a thick, screw-in back with a twelve sided polygon design for the caseback tool. Of course, any quality caseback wrench can be used, but Longines did make a specific tool for each size of back, like most manufacturers did.

The Condition

This is a personal favourite!

This vintage Longines "Conquest" got a beautiful dial structure and beautiful lustre and applied multi-faceted indexes. The dial shows some signs of ageing as you can see, but what to expect on a original dial from 1950's?

The upper case has a gold capped surface – this is formed from a sheet of gold fused to the metal beneath and is a much more hard wearing and robust finish than standard gold plating. Turning the watch over reveals the weighty stainless steel screw-down back with its central gold medallion. The medallion features the Longines fish logo which is heightened with translucent green enamel.

The crystal is in very good condition without any cracks och dings.

The movement is in a very good, newly serviced, condition!
